Welcome to Straight Up Dog Talk—the podcast where honesty meets heart and no question is too small to matter.
This isn’t just another dog show. We dive into the real stuff: misunderstood behavior, controversial training advice, nutrition myths, grief, reactivity, wellness, and the everyday challenges of life with dogs.
Join me and a diverse lineup of trainers, behaviorists, pet professionals, and passionate dog guardians as we share raw stories, lessons learned the hard way, and insights you won’t find in a Google search.
No topic is off-limits, and no dog parent question is too small to matter.
This is your space for real education, deeper connection, and judgment-free support—on both sides of the leash.
Whether you’re brand new to the dog world or deep in it, you’ll walk away feeling seen, supported, and inspired.

Em is a passionate animal advocate with over 30 years of hands-on experience as a retired veterinary technician, pet sitter, dog walker, and now a virtual dog trainer. She holds multiple certifications in the canine field, including Family Dog Mediator (FDM), Certified Canine Enrichment Technician (DN-CET), and Certified Professional Canine Nutritionist (CPCN).
Her lifelong dream came to life through Straight Up Dog Talk, where she brings a perspective few others can—shaped by decades behind the treatment room doors and in the homes of dogs with big feelings. Her mission? To normalize honest, often overlooked conversations about dog parenthood. From behavior and training to health, nutrition, and grief, Em guides pet guardians through every stage with empathy, education, and zero judgment.
When she’s not podcasting or training, you’ll find her hanging with her two dogs, Toby and Fitz—who regularly steal the spotlight on her Instagram and remind her daily why this work matters.

Josh is a multifaceted creative with a passion for storytelling, humor, and podcasting. As a role-playing game author and longtime podcaster, he brought a unique mix of insight, wit, and technical skill to Straight Up Dog Talk—helping shape the show’s foundation and voice.
Josh served as the editor and producer for episodes 1–48 and cohosted through episode 39, playing a key role in helping Em launch the podcast and learn the ropes of podcast production. His presence in the early episodes reflects the collaborative energy that helped the show take off.
Previously the host of several geek-focused podcasts including Digital Llama, Knightmare, and Wasta Show (RIP!), Josh later cohosted Graphically Novel and RetConversations. Although he has since retired Graphically Novel, he continues to explore new creative passions and geeky projects behind the scenes.
While Josh has moved on from Straight Up Dog Talk, his influence remains a valued part of the podcast’s journey—and we’re forever grateful for his early contributions to the show.
If you’ve ever found yourself lost in a sea of Google searches, unsure what’s right for your dog or who to trust—you’re not alone. That’s exactly how Straight Up Dog Talk started. I was searching for answers and coming up short. Everything felt confusing, overwhelming, and conflicting. I didn’t know where to start, and I certainly didn’t feel supported.
Because finding answers shouldn’t feel impossible, I created this podcast to be the resource I wish I had—a place to start when you don’t even know what questions to ask. A space where we talk about the things no one else is talking about, especially in areas like dog training and nutrition that are often unregulated and misunderstood.
Every episode gives you something real: trusted information, thoughtful guidance, and a direct way to get more help if you need it. Whether it’s a training breakthrough, a story that hits home, or a product I’ve personally tested, you’ll walk away with tools that support both you and your dog.
As a dog trainer, retired vet tech, and lifelong animal advocate with over 30 years of hands-on experience, my mission has always been rooted in compassion, education, and connection. Whether I’m working through tough behavior issues, navigating health concerns, or just celebrating the little wins—I’m here to help you feel seen and supported.
Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about training your dog.
It’s about building a life together.
Ready to feel more confident and connected with your dog?
Let’s chat about how I can support you.
I’m getting ready to take Straight Up Dog Talk on a cross-country RV journey with my two dogs, Toby and Fitz—and I’d love to bring you along for the ride.
This isn’t just about travel. It’s a deeper extension of the podcast’s mission: to highlight the people, pups, and places shaping the dog world—and to bring real, honest conversations to life through in-person episodes, meetups, and connection.
Along the way, I’ll be visiting local rescues, meeting with incredible dog professionals, recording on-site interviews, and exploring dog-friendly communities in every region we can reach.
And yes, I’ll still be offering virtual training support from wherever we park—proving that education and connection can happen from the mountains, the beach, or a quiet corner of a campground.
But here’s the truth:
🚌 I don’t have the RV yet.
To get this journey on the road, I need support from this amazing community we’ve built together.
• Donate to help fund the RV that will become our mobile podcast studio and training space
• Join the guest waitlist to be part of an episode when I’m in your area
• Connect me with potential sponsors or collaborators who believe in dog education and advocacy
• Share the mission with fellow dog lovers, pet professionals, and small business owners
This RV isn’t just for me—it’s for you, your dogs, and the stories that deserve to be told. If Straight Up Dog Talk has ever helped you feel seen, supported, or inspired, now’s the time to help bring this next chapter to life.
